Senior Mediation Training Strengthens Somalia’s Institutional Peacebuilding Capacity

On 12-13 August, Principles for Peace (P4P), in partnership with Somalia’s Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation (MOIFAR), delivered a two-day senior level mediation training. The training brought together key actors from MOIFAR, the Office of the Prime Minister, and the Federal Member States.

The training covered mediation techniques, approaches, and process design, giving participants the opportunity to exchange experiences, deepen their practical understanding of mediation, and discuss how best to support and advance Somalia’s ongoing mediation efforts.

The workshop is part of P4P’s broader engagement with Somali institutions on reconciliation, mediation, and peacebuilding. P4P remains committed to accompanying Somalia’s journey toward peace and stability, and to deepening its partnership with MOIFAR and other national institutions.

The Director General of the Ministry of Interior, Federal Affairs and Reconciliation, Abdulkadir Ali, opened the Senior Mediation Training, placing stronger institutional mediation capacity at the heart of Somalia’s peace and state building agenda.

He highlighted that durable peace depends not only on resolving disputes, but on equipping institutions with the skills to manage tensions early, sustain dialogue, and build trust across communities and political actors. Strengthening these capacities, he noted, is essential to making reconciliation more effective, preventive, and nationally owned.

The Director General also welcomed the continued partnership of Principles for Peace and the United Nations in supporting Somalia’s efforts to strengthen mediation practice, institutional resilience, and long term peacebuilding.
