Principles for Peace Executive Director Hiba Qasas had the honour of speaking at the China Globalisation Forum, hosted by the Center for China and Globalisation (CCG), for an Ambassadorial regional panel. She shared a 5×5 vision for a sustainable peace between Palestinians and Israelis, rooted in the charter of the Uniting for a Shared Future (USF). Here are the key takeaways from the speech, aligned with the 5-by-5 vision:
5 Priority Actions
1. End the War in Gaza
– Immediate cessation of hostilities, release of hostages, and initiation of a structured peace process.
2. Leverage International Consensus
– Utilize the broad international agreement on the necessity of a two-state solution as the only viable path to peace and regional stability.
3. Regional Formula for Immediate Measures
– Develop a practicable regional formula that provides tangible benefits to the population, supports state institution building, and offers security guarantees.
4. International and Regional Cooperation
– Facilitate transition and maintain stability in Gaza through international and regional collaboration, learning from past stabilization and peacekeeping missions.
5. Marshall Plan for Gaza Reconstruction
– Implement a comprehensive plan to reconstruct Gaza and boost economic development across Palestinian territories, countering radicalization through prosperity and opportunity.
5 Core Principles for Peace and for a shared future
1. Mutual Recognition and Acknowledgment
– Recognize and respect the right of both Palestinians and Israelis to independence, statehood, and self-determination.
2. Dignity and Equality
– Ensure that both peoples live with dignity and equality, fostering a society where all individuals are valued.
3. Security and Safety
– Guarantee safety and security for all, addressing the fears and insecurities of both communities.
4. Agency and Inclusion
– Promote active participation and inclusion of all stakeholders in the peace process, giving everyone a voice and role in shaping their future.
5. Trust through Healing
– Build trust through processes of healing and reconciliation, acknowledging past grievances and working towards a shared future.
These principles reflect a vision emerging among peace-minded Palestinians and Israelis. In March 2024, these leaders enshrined their shared vision in a common charter and established the USF coalition as a framework for concrete action.
